Learning to Pray - Prayer Walking

Prayer walks are a great way to pray specifically for our neighbourhoods. Scripture provides examples of people of faith prayerfully walking through cities as they sought the Lord's peace and direction for the city (e.g. Nehemiah 2:11-18; Jeremiah 29:7; Luke 10:1-20; Acts 17:16). As the name suggests, prayer walking involves walking through the neighbourhood and responding in prayer to the different things God draws your attention to. Below is a guide adapted from a resource from City-to-City.

Who to go with and where to walk

Given the width of sidewalks, it's often most practical to go in pairs or by yourself. Pray as you walk, eyes open. Stop at landmarks. If praying with a partner, pray audibly so they can pray along. Pray brief prayers. Pass it back and forth. Pray in unity off of each other's prayers to focus on specific themes.

What and who do I pray for?

Ask God to give insight into his plans for the city. Ask to fit into his plans. Ask for open doors and opportunities to love and serve the people of this community. Ask for courage to love as Jesus loves. Pray for revival! Here are some areas you can pray for:

1. Critical needs
2. Critical intersections
3. Cultural influencers
4. Churches and Christians who love and serve the city
5. Neighbours, residents, and major people groups
6. Peace, safety, and protection against crime and unrest

What else should I do?

Ask God to give you the eyes to see the city through his eyes. Take a note of things you observed or were drawn to:

1. Where is there a need for physical provision, relational reconciliation and/or spiritual deliverance?
2. What surprised you?  
3. What encouraged you?  
4. What were you thankful for?
5. Where did you observe beauty?
6. What made you uncomfortable?  
7. What did you struggle with?
8. Where specifically did you observe needs and gospel opportunities?
